Calm by design: nothing here chases you

Nothing on ipe.rest is trying to bring you back. We built the studio that way on purpose, and it may be the quietest design choice we have made.

Much of the modern web is designed to be returned to. Streaks count your days in a row, badges reward your habits, and notifications arrive to tell you how long you have been away. None of it is malicious, but all of it asks for a little more of you than you meant to give. ipe() is a studio for tired minds, and a tired mind has very little attention left to spend.

What we leave out

This site has no streaks, no badges and no notifications that exist only to bring you back. There is no account to create, no feed to scroll, and no counter that falls to zero if you skip a day. If you want to follow the journal, there is an RSS feed, and in that case your own reader decides when to tell you, not us.

The music keeps the same rule. The ten letters of dear(you); vol.1 give no advice and ask for no promise. A letter can be opened when you are ready and read at your own speed, and it does not need an answer. Each track ends with one whispered breath, “ipe. be still,” and then it simply ends.

Small on purpose

The studio itself is small on purpose. One person answers the mail, and we write back within ten days. That is slower than a chatbot, and we are fine with it, because a reply that takes a little while is usually a reply that someone actually read.

We collect only basic visit statistics, which the privacy policy describes in plain words. We would rather know a little less about you than build something that watches closely in order to pull you back in.

This is also the picture behind our name. An idle process is not waiting for a ping. The machine is on, ready and quiet, and it is not asking anything of you.

What we ask instead

We ask for very little. Press play if you like. Let a track run all the way to its last second. When you are done, close the tab without thinking of it as leaving, because nothing here is keeping count.

ipe(); // come back when you want to

If you return tomorrow, we are glad. If you return next month, that is just as good. Either way, nothing here will have moved, except that you are a little more rested than before.
